I’ve often asked myself, “How can I overcome my trauma?” and “How can I heal with all the baggage I carry?” If you have been asking these questions about yourself, read this article for some hope and advise.

What is Trauma?

Trauma is feeling emotionally distressed by an event that can have long-lasting effects on the future life of the person who experiences it. Trauma may come as a single event or in a series doing much harm to the person experiencing it.

Some examples of adult trauma may involve:

• Natural disasters
• Being assaulted
• Terrorist attacks
• Mass shootings
• Acts of violence such as rape
• Car accidents
• Death of a loved one
• Living in a war zone
• War
• Rape
• Domestic abuse

The effects on adults of these events are emotionally disturbing and deeply profound. After the trauma, the survivor of these events is functioning, but they are muted by the trauma response. Trauma causes great harm to the person’s mental, social, emotional, physical, and spiritual well-being.
